She was the Chosen One, the Stellinar, the Star Maiden, descendent of the First People, and Bride of the Night Sky. She was bathed and her waist length, light blue hair was pulled back and cut off at the nape of her neck. Her naked body was anointed with perfumed oils and she was dressed in a sheer black gown. Her face was painted pink and blue, with a pattern of stars drawn across her nose, which were said to represent the stars of their home system.
She was hungry, having fasted since last night, and her head hurt. Her thoughts drifted back to last night, when she and several other girls around her age danced naked for the Leader at the Feast of the Stellinar. He had chosen her and she had spent the rest of the evening, sitting on his lap and drinking from his cup.
She closed her eyes, recalling the pleasant buzz she had felt. That led to thoughts of his roaming hands. She considered herself lucky. She remembered watching him take the other girls’ maidenhead. Those who fell pregnant had elevated status among their people, especially if they bore him a daughter. Any who did not, were given to the Stellinar as her handmaidens, during the next new moon. It was a fate she had avoided as it was not a pleasant one. Those girls were passed around the men in their village, who had their way with them. Fathers, brothers, uncles, they all slept with the girls, ending with the Leader, while the women watched, as she remembered watching, before being chosen as a Candidate. She pitied those poor girls, as they were buried alive.
She sighed. Her fate, though revered, was hardly better. She would be led naked through the village by the other girls as the sun set and the stars came out. Some, asking for a blessing, would touch her as she passed by until she reached the Stairway to the Stars, where the remains of the Mother of All lay. There, the Leader would give her one final drink and wait with her, watching as she fell into eternal sleep, safe in the Mother’s arms.
She took the cup a naked old crone pressed in her hand and drank. She felt ill from the sweetness and nearly vomited back up, but she somehow managed to keep it down as she fell to her knees. The crone helped her up. Two of the girls from last night removed her robe and the crone rubbed more of the scented oil on her body. When the crone was finished, she kissed her and left her with the other girls.
She waited in silent contemplation until it was time. The two girls led her from the room and out into the streets. She could see it was already dusk and by the time she reached the arms of the Mother, night would have fallen. She shivered in the cold and following the girls, she made her way around the village. After a while, she stopped feeling the cold and the many hands that touched her as she passed.
She walked slowly to the Stairway to the Stars where the Leader waited with her parents. She stood there with her eyes closed as her parents said their last goodbyes. She felt a tear trickle down her cheek when her mother hugged her. It was cold now that the sun had set and her mother’s embrace was full of warmth. She did not want to leave. Another tear followed the first and then another, and she was sobbing when the Leader pulled her away.
She cried herself out as she climbed the Stairway to the Stars. She continued her climb, leaning heavily on the Leader. She was nearly to the top when he picked her up and carried her. She clung to him, drinking in his warmth. It hurt to let him go when they reached the top.
She stood there, shivering, as he handed her the sacred beacon. She held it carefully in her arms as she took three steps forward. Switching it on, she briefly held it aloft, before lowering it. She imagined the cheers of the people as she turned and approached the Mother of All. She knelt and placed the beacon in front of the twisted arms of the Mother.
She sat back on her heels. She was so tired; she could barely keep her eyes open. She did notice when then the Leader came out of the Mother, carrying the sacred bones of the former Star Maiden. She watched him bury them, before lying on the ground. She closed her eyes, briefly falling asleep. The Leader shook her awake.
She blinked and at his urging stumbled to her feet. She followed him inside the mother and lay down on the cold metal floor. The leader sat next to her and she shivered, often violently, and whimpered as she snuggled up next to him. Her breathing grew labored as the night wore on. She took her final breath and whispered, “Mother...” as eternal sleep claimed her, no longer caring that the Leader had left. She was safe in the Mother’s arms…
