“Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins,” Jenny muttered under her breath as she drove past the bright orange sign, advertising the fall gourd. She and her best friend Kaitlyn were driving around the countryside, looking for farm stands, in their search for the perfect pumpkin.
“What?” Kaitlyn said. She looked out the window at the scenery, while her best friend drove.
“I feel like we’ve been driving for hours and have seen every stupid pumpkin in the county.”
“Oh…”
Jenny sighed. “Look, there must be a farm stand up ahead, as I’ve seen that same pumpkin sign like three times already.”
“What sign?”
“That one!” Jenny pointed as she slowed to a stop.
Kaitlyn looked over at her friend. “Uh, there’s no sign, Jen.”
“What?” She leaned over and looked out the passenger side window. Jenny frowned as she sat up. “I swear I just saw a sign that said, ‘Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins’…”
“Oh-kay.”
Jenny shrugged and continued driving. “Weird, hunh?”
“Yeah.”
“There it is again!”
“What?”
“That stupid sign!”
“The pumpkin one?”
Jenny nodded. “It’s creepy. I feel like it’s following me. And it’s even creepier that you can’t see it.”
“I think you’ve been watching too much Twilight Zone,” Kaitlyn chuckled.
“Yeah!” Jenny laughed. She was starting to feel better as the sign must have been a figment of her imagination, since it apparently disappeared.
“Oh shit!” Kaitlyn cried.
“What?”
“I saw it!”
“Saw what?” Jen glanced over at her friend.
“The ‘pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins’ sign!”
The girls screamed. A man-like figure, dressed in tattered clothes, with a pumpkin for a head, mysteriously appeared in the middle of the road. Jenny served to avoid hitting it and crashed into a tree. The figured laughed and disappeared, happy it had claimed two more victims.
