Jen looked up at the tree outside her window. She had strung fairy lights in it and she liked how magical they looked against the night sky. It was like the stars had fallen out of the sky to land in her tree.
She smiled. Even the moon hung itself on her tree. The whole thing was pretty cool, in her humble opinion.
Jen took her phone out of her back pocket and took a picture of the tree. She wanted to remember this moment, as she would be moving next month to go live with her children in the city. Jen sighed. She did not feel like she was too old to live by herself or look after such a big house as her daughter put it. She had hoped her son would have bought her house. He had a big family, but her daughter-in-law wanted to live closer to her mother.
She wished she did not have to leave here. Unfortunately, there was nothing she could do to change things. With a heavy heart, she went inside, took off her coat, and climbed the stairs to the second floor. She walked down the hall to her room. Closing the door behind her, Jen got ready for bed.
Jen crawled into bed and turned off the light. She snuggled under the covers as sleep claimed her. When morning came, she woke up to the sound of crying and the realization her wish had come true. She never had to leave the house again as she was free to haunt it for enternity…
