The faerie queen hurried along the woodland path intent on finding the rune stone. A light snow was beginning to fall and she had to find it soon. The faerie queen quickened her steps, her wings fluttering behind her.
The runes… she thought. The runes… I must find the rune stones! The runes upon it will tell me what I need to know, I’m sure of it! My king, dear husband, I swear I will not fail you! I swear I shall bring you the answer to our prayers; the way to save our kingdom from the hand of man…
The faerie queen paused. She had lost her way as the magic slowly faded from the kingdom. Looking both left and right, she frowned. She felt she was so close and yet, so far. Closing her eyes, she drew upon the last reserves of her magic. She had a vision and all became clear. Finding her way again, she raced towards the stone.
It was set in the middle of a faerie ring, guarded from the eyes of man by the simplest of spells. Because the magic in the land was fading, a child of man sat upon it, obscuring the runes, but that was not the worst of it. His presence completely drained the magic from the area and the runes, as she whispered the words, which would not glow.
The faerie queen felt a stab of fear. She was sure the child of man could see her, not as a fluttering butterfly that could easily dance just out of reach, but as she was. She watched in horror as he got up and strode towards her, her fear keeping her rooted to the spot.
The child of man grabbed her wrist, pulling her close. He laughed as he pushed her to the ground, crushing her wings and doing unspeakable things to her. She lay there, feeling the magic drain from her. She had failed her dear husband, the king. She wanted to die as the pain of losing her magic was too much for her.
The faerie queen wept. The Age of Magic was over. Man had won, usurping the king and laying his kingdom to waste. Closing her eyes, the faerie queen faded away, leaving nothing more than blanket of snow and a puzzled child of man.
