Amber heaved a heavy sigh as she watched her husband Bernd toast a marshmallow in the fireplace. He was using a table fork instead of the long handled one they used when barbequing. Amber was sure he was going to burn himself and as much as she wanted to stop him, she was afraid of startling him and causing a burn. So she stood by and silently watched, feeling as though she had created a toasted marshmallow monster as Bernd seemed to like them more than eating them straight from the bag.

Bernd ignored her as he deftly turned the fork over the flames. The marshmallow turned a faint golden color, before he pulled it from the fireplace. Bernd blew on it a couple of times to cool the marshmallow, before eating it off the fork. “Amber,” he said, his mouth full of the gooey goodness. “Want one?”

Amber shook her head at him. She rubbed tired at her face. “It’s true; I’ve created a monster.”

“Hunh?” Bernd looked at her like she suddenly sprouted a couple more heads.

“I should never have showed you how to toast marshmallows.”

“But they’re good!” Bernd interrupted.

She sighed again. “I know; that’s why I showed you how to make them.” Amber snorted. “At least you don’t like them burnt.”

He frowned. “Hunh?”

“Burnt, not Bernd.” Amber grinned. She got up from the sofa and walked over to him. “Anyway, before you burn the house down and Vati kills us, let me show you how to use the stove.” She reached down and grabbed the bag of marshmallows from the hearth. “Kitchen. Now!”

Jawohl!” Bernd swallowed the marshmallow he had just made, got up, and followed her into the kitchen. Finding her next to the stove, he watched intently as Amber skewered a marshmallow on a fork. She turned on the stove and held it over the flames, toasting it. When it caught fire, she calmly removed it from the stove and blew out the flame, leaving a crunchy charred spot.

“Eww…” Bernd said as he made a face. “It’s burnt to a crisp.”

“So?” Amber ate it, charred bits and all. “That was good.” She grinned.

“That was gross.”

She shrugged. “Should we make another one?”

“Nah… I had enough for now.” Bernd eyed the bag of marshmallows like it would bite him if he was not careful.

“Good, more for me!” Amber snagged another one from the bag. Popping the marshmallow on her fork, she began to toast it.

Bernd sat down at the kitchen table and watched.

“Are you sure you don’t want one?” Amber removed the lightly toasted marshmallow from the flame. “It’s barely toasted like you like it.”

Bernd shrugged and took it from her, careful to avoid burning his fingers. “Danke.” He grinned lopsidedly at her.

“What?” Amber said as she turned to make herself a toasted marshmallow.

“It’s a marshmallow world and just like ours, they come in all colors.” He nodded towards the stove and her well done marshmallow.

She grinned. “Yup!” Holding her marshmallow up, she saluted him, before eating it. “And I like it.”

“Me too.” He grinned back at her.

They are too sweet but basically in Girl Scouts I would take tin foil, put graham crackers with chocolate on it (wrap it) heat it, and then melt a marshmallow on a stick. Pull the tin foil and use the topper graham cracker to scrap the marshmallow onto the chocolate cracker which glues them together

No it wasn't around here. I would have done it. Even in grade school I knew I wanted to be a doctor and by middle school knew I needed all the clubs etc

I think that's what makes it so hard for me to get over the loss of that career 22 years

You're not wrong. At least it's lower pressure than a doctor

That's true (though I really did write as much then as I do now. I channel my stress into words)
