Author’s notes: In Madrona they are a few groups of people who are named after legendary as well as mythological people. Elves are such people. Elves live in the northwest part of Madrona; they live off the land like Native Americans and other indigenous people. They’re thought to be the descendants of hippies and other free spirits.
Author’s notes 2: This takes place after the events of “The Tale of the Spicelanders and the Elf.” Please also note that it’s spoilerish for that story.
Author’s notes 3: This is unbetaed, so any mistakes therein are my own. Please also note that this was written for Madrona Project and 12 days of Ficmas.

Soaring Eagle tromped through the snow to greet them. Grinning from ear to ear, his pale face flushed from the cold and joy at their return, he hurried as best he could over to them. “Hey! Did ya find him?!”

Before the others could speak, Black Dog said, “Yeah.”

Fierce like Panther scowled at him. She looked down at Soaring Eagle, who had gotten close enough to grab hold of her horse’s bridle. She frowned, trying to choose her words carefully. It just hurt too much to speak, especially with Rabbit sniffling behind her. Fierce like Panther opened her mouth several times, but nothing would come out.

“Well?” Soaring Eagle said softly. He could tell something was wrong as there was no sign of Panther’s twin brother Little Hawk. He looked over at Black Dog.

“Snow Beast got him.”

“Oh...” Soaring Eagle frowned. “Wait… Isn’t that some story the elders tell to keep the little ones from wandering off in the snow?”

Black Dog nodded.

“Yeah, it’s real alright!” Fierce like Panther said, all the hurt and anger she felt at Little Hawk’s choice to stay with the strange people who took him in, coloring her tone. She jerked her horse’s head, pulling the bridle from Soaring Eagle’s grip and backing the horse away from him. Kicking her heels into the horse’s side, she urged him forward. The horse took off as fast as it could through the knee high snow.

“Oh… Sorry!” He looked around helplessly at Black Dog and Rabbit, who was weeping over his horse’s neck. “I-I didn’t know.” Soaring Eagle looked he wanted to cry as well. He may not have been as close to Little Hawk as the others, but it still hurt to lose his friend.

“I know,” Black Dog said.

“Is Panther going to be okay?”

“Yeah, but it’ll take time. She had been looking after him since they were kids.” Black Dog looked over in the direction Fierce like Panther had left in. He turned his attention back to Soaring Eagle. “Flaming Arrow will look after her.”

Soaring Eagle nodded. “She spends a lot of time with him. I think she’s learning to be a shaman too.” Rabbit let out a loud sob and Soaring Eagle looked over at him. “You okay?”

Rabbit nodded. “I got to go,” he said softly. He urged his horse slowly past them, heading towards his tent.

“Wait!” Soaring Eagle turned to head after him.

“Let him be, Eagle,” Black Dog said. “He just wants to be alone with his grief.”

Soaring Eagle sighed. “Okay. Although, I don’t think he should be alone.”

“Yes and no, but I’d err on the side of no. Just give them their space and time to grieve.”

“And you too? You gonna be okay, Black Dog?”

He nodded. “As okay as I can be given what happened. I wouldn’t worry too much about us, Eagle.”

“Okay,” Soaring Eagle said, although his manner suggested he was full of worry about them.

“Let’s go,” Black Dog said. “It’s starting to snow.” He urged his horse forward.

Soaring Eagle sighed softly and quietly trudged along beside him. He hoped Little Hawk did not suffer too much when the Snow Beast got him. He decided to honor his friend’s memory by warning the others that the monster was real and to be careful, wandering around in the snow alone. He also decided to look after Rabbit, who seemed so lost and alone without his best friend.
