For Jen, who loved dragons…
Jenny sat at the window seat, watching the snow fall. A cup of tea warmed her hands and the occasional sip helped warm her from the inside. She shivered when a gust of wind blew snow against the window. She closed her eyes, letting her imagination run wild.
In her head, she was no peasant, but a queen and the snow that danced over her window was dragon’s breath. She had a pet ice dragon, who breathed snow instead of fire. As queen, Jenny would wrap herself in ermine; mount her dragon, and fly off, leaving ice crystals in her wake.
Jenny was so lost in her own little world that several minutes had passed, before she realized her mother was calling her. “Coming, Mama!” Casting one last longing look over her shoulder at the falling snow, Jenny scooted off the window seat, nearly colliding with her father, who had come to see what was taking her so long to come and have breakfast. “Oh! Dad!” She blinked up at him, returning his smile.
“Sit, child.”
Jenny sat back down.
“What’s so fascinating out the window?”
“I was pretending I was a queen and the snow was my dragon and-”
Her father chuckled. “You and your dragons.”
She felt her cheeks heating up. “Uh…”
Her father ruffled her hair. “Stay put, I’ll bring your porridge.” He took her empty teacup with him when he left.
“Thanks, Dad!” Jenny sat back in the window seat and watched the snow fall. As she looked out the window, she once again saw her beloved ice dragon and her soft flannel nightgown became the rich robes a queen would wear. She drew the blanket closer around her, imagining it was ermine, and that she was outside, and heading towards her icy pet.
