Didi got a couple of plates out from the buffet. He turned to set the table, using what his husband called “the good china,” which was a mismatched set of dishware that was gathered piece by piece from various thrift shops. As he set the plate in his hand down, Didi’s memories, of where they got it, surfaced. He smiled and in his mind’s eye, he saw the antique shop they were in when Tino saw it.
“Look what I found!” Tino said. He grinned ear to ear.
“What?” Didi turned around to face him.
Tino held up a delicate porcelain plate. “The flowers match your eyes.” His grin morphed into an impish smile. “Let’s get it.”
“Because it matches my eyes?” Didi frowned.
“No, Silly, let’s get it cuz it’s the final piece we need to complete the good china.”
“Don’t we have enough plates for everyone?”
“Kinda…”
“Well?” Didi said softly.
“Well, we do have enough if Vati and Nonno come over or Bernd, Amber, Greta, and the kids, but not if they all come over at the same time. And what if James and Che come over too? Or Minky?”
Didi shook his head and smiled. His husband was right; while they did have enough if their family came over separately, when everyone came over at once during the holidays, it was always a mad dash to the party store for dinnerware. “Let’s get it.”
“Yay!” Tino leaned against him. “Oh! We should also pick up some dessert bowls and plates.”
“And coffee cups?”
“Yeah…”
Didi set the plate down. It may have taken them awhile to complete their set, but each piece held a memory that a completed matched set would not. Even better, if they broke a dish, they could always go antique hunting until they found the perfect replacement.
