“We’re gonna make a cake for Christmas, Didi,” Bernd said to his little brother. He took the box of Funfetti cake mix and dumped it into a bowl.

Didi shook his head. He was sure this was not going work or taste good. Still, he could not help watching his brother dump eggs and water into the mixing bowl. He had been making cakes since he was ten and he never once used a boxed cake mix.

“Didi? Where’s the mixer?”

Instead of replying, Didi walked over to the cabinet where it was kept. He took it out and handed it to brother. He nodded as Bernd plugged it in, followed by pushing the beaters in until they clicked.

Bernd switched the hand mixer on he moved it around the bowl, grinning as the dry ingredients slowly folded into the wet. “Didi, can you grease the bottom of the pan?”

“Okay.” He took the can of Pam and sprayed the bottom of the cake pan. Didi returned his brother’s grin with a smile of his own as Bernd poured the batter in. “The oven’s ready, how long should we bake it for?”

“It says on the box.” Bernd popped the cake into the oven. Grabbing his phone, he asked, “How long?”

“It says, ‘thirty-two to thirty-four minutes’, but I would check it after a half hour.”

“Half hour it is…” Bernd set a timer on his phone. “Now we wait.”

“Okay.”

They sat in the kitchen, chatting about work and the upcoming holidays.” When the half hour was up, Bernd took the cake from the oven. “How do I know if it’s done? It looks like it, I think.”

Didi walked over to where the cake sat on the stove. He reached into the cabinet above the stove for the toothpicks. Taking one, he poked the middle of the cake with it. “See how it came out clean?” He showed his brother the toothpick.

“Yeah?”

“If it looks like that it’s done. And if you make another cake, always time two or three minutes less than what they say. The oven runs hot.”

Danke.”

Bitte.”

“Now we let cool.”

“I know.”

Bernd chuckled. “I forgot you know how to make cakes from scratch.” H took a can of green Funfetti frosting from the pantry and set it down on the counter next to the stove. “It’s the frosting that goes with the cake.”

Didi nodded.

After twenty minutes, the cake was cool enough to frost. Bernd took a butter knife from the drawer. He opened the can of frosting and mixed the frosting, before scraping it out the can and onto the cake. Despite his brother’s unspoken misgivings, Bernd frosted the top of the cake, smoothing the mound of frosting, until it covered the top of the cake. He then peel the foil from the frosting’s can’s lid and carefully shook the sprinkles, it contained, all over the top of the cake.

“Get some plates,” Bernd said.

Didi took two from the cabinet and handed them over.

Bernd placed a slice of cake on each, while Didi grabbed a couple of forks. The two of them sat down and ate the cake. Didi was surprised at how good it was, despite not being made from scratch.

“This is really good,” he said.

Danke! I’m glad you liked it.” Bernd grinned. “Oh crap!”

“What?”

“It was supposed to be for dessert.”

“Oh… Schnickies!!” Didi stood up from the table. “I just remembered why I’m here. I need the fish Tino left in the freezer!”

“Ooops!” Bernd snorted. “I’m not much of a cook, but fish doesn’t take that long to cook.”

“It does when your husband’s making a seven course seafood meal.” Didi followed him downstairs to the basement and the chest freezer nestled in the alcove next to the laundry room.

They brought the various fish up the stairs and put it in the cooler. “See you later, Bruder.” Didi grabbed his coat and put it on. He reached for the cooler.

“Later.” Bernd watched him leave. Now to go explain to Vati why two slices of cake are missing…
