The Best Birthday Ever!

Summary: Bobby does his best to celebrate Dean’s birthday…

For Vexed, with love… Happy Birthday!

Bobby took the boys shopping at the local pick-and-pay. It had everything from a small bakery, deli counter, the usual grocery items, and a small section with a few clothing items, household goods, crafts, and toys. Tomorrow was Dean’s birthday and Bobby wanted everything to be perfect, after getting a late night phone call from John that he was not going to make it home in time for Dean’s party.

They wandered the aisles, picking up everything they needed for the barbeque. Bobby wondered how he was going to get the grill going in the middle of winter, but if Dean wanted burgers for his birthday dinner, he was going to do his best to make them. He picked up a package of burgers and put it in their cart. “Dean, what else do you want, besides burgers?”

“Fries and those tater tot things Sammy likes.”

“Yeah!” Sammy added. “And cake for Dean, so we can sing Happy Birthday!”

“Nah…” Dean looked over at Bobby. “Uncle Bobby, is it okay if we get birthday pie instead?”

Birthday pie? Bobby mouthed with a frown. When Dean looked sad about his choice, he quickly said, “Sure thing, kiddo. What kind of pie is birthday pie?”

“Cherry,” Dean said, “with lots of whip cream.” He grinned.

“Cherry pie with whip cream it is,” Bobby said as they picked up said pie and a can of whipped cream from the cold display near the bakery. He ushered the boys to the toy aisle. Dean picked a tiny car that looked just like John’s Impala as his present and it tore at Bobby’s heart.

“It’s the best present ever, Uncle Bobby!” Dean gushed. “Thank you!”

“You want something too, Sammy?” Bobby asked.

“It’s not my birthday, Uncle Bobby.” Sammy looked up at him.

“It’s okay, Squirt. How about a coloring book and crayons?” Bobby grabbed the nearest one, with unicorns and princesses on the cover.

Dean tried to hold back a snicker. “Samantha,” he said softly to himself.

“Oh… Thanks.”

Bobby took a look at the coloring book, realizing how girly it looked; he reached for one with forest creatures on it and put the princess one back. “Better?” Sammy’s look of relief was all he needed to know it was. Now that they had everything they needed, Bobby herded the boys to the checkout counter. After paying for the groceries, they left the store and headed home.

Suppertime was fun, with the boys helping him with the barbeque, by playing in the snow. Bobby hoped the burgers were cooked enough so no one got sick. As bright as the back door light was, Bobby found it hard to tell if the burgers were light grey inside, instead of pink. Hoping for the best, he loaded the tray up with the burgers. “Inside, boys. Supper’s ready.” They followed him inside to the kitchen.

Bobby figured the burgers must be good as Dean ate three of them and there was only one left. He sighed softly, thinking Karen would have loved this. Getting up, he helped the boys clear the table. While he washed their plates, Sammy sat and colored, while Dean drove his little car around the kitchen.

Drying his hands, Bobby said, “Who wants some birthday pie?”

“ME!!” the boys chorused.

Bobby took the pie out of the box and tried to put a candle on it. “Damn it!” he muttered under his breath when it refused to stand up. Bringing the pie over to the kitchen table, he started singing, “Happy birthday to you…”

Sammy joined in. “Happy birf day, dear Dean…”

“Happy birthday to you!”

Dean blushed. “Thanks, Uncle Bobby, Sammy. This is the best birthday ever!” He frowned, looking for the candle to blow out. “Uncle Bobby?”

“How’s he gonna make a wish?” Sammy asked.

“Here” Bobby grabbed the box of matches off the counter and lit one. “Be careful and don’t forget to make a wish.”

Dean snorted and blew out the match.

“You make a wish, Dean?” Sammy asked.

He nodded. He made the same wish, he always did; that Dad would come home to a real house like Uncle Bobby’s that was next door to him. It had not come true yet, but a kid could hope, right?

Bobby cut them each a slice of pie and they sat there, enjoying every bite. He loved whenever they came to visit and was glad they could make some happy memories. He smiled thinking Dean was right; this was the best birthday ever.
