Rosie looked out the window and sighed. The few raindrops that had fallen had rapidly coalesced into a steady stream. The sound of thunder in distance meant this sudden shower would soon be a summer storm.
She wondered how long the storm would be as she had to get out in the harbor. Today’s catch needed to be caught and brought to market. She let out another sigh.
“Papa wouldn’t go out on a day like this and he wouldn’t want you to go either,” her sister Violet said as walked over to her.
“I know, but… Rosie started.
“But what?” Violet sat down on the window seat. She looked out the window, wondering what her sister found so fascinating about the neighbor’s house.
“I… I feel so free out in the harbor,” Rosie said quietly.
“Mama said Papa always said the same thing too.”
“Yeah?” Rosie sat next to her sister.
Violet nodded. “He also hated rain as much as you do.” Violet smiled. “Bet the fish are happy.”
Rosie laughed. “Why would the fish be happy?”
“No one with an ounce of sense is out fishing.”
They laughed.
“Makes sense,” Rosie said. “I guess Mama will make fried potatoes without the fish for dinner then.” She shrugged.
“There’s half a chicken left from yesterday.”
“I thought Poppy ate it all.” Rosie frowned.
“Nope. Mama told her to leave some for another day.”
Rosie nodded.
“So don’t worry, the storm will pass and you can go out tomorrow.” Violet patted her sister’s knee. “And when it does, let’s ask Mama if we can go visit Iris and see her new baby.”
“Okay.” Rosie stood up and looked out the window one last time. “Oh hey, Tuna,” She knelt and patted their cat, who had walked over and rubbed against her legs.
Violet giggled. “She must be hiding from Daisy again.”
“Probably!” Rosie snorted. Their baby sister loved to dress their poor cat up in her dolls’ clothes, despite multiple scratches and warnings about said scratches from their mother. “Maybe we should bring Daisy with us.”
“I think so.” Violet stood up. “Now, let’s get you dressed in something more appropriate for visiting, before we ask Mama.” She took her sister by the arm and started walking towards the stairs leading to their room.
“It’s not like Iris hasn’t seen me like this or anyone else for that matter,” Rosie said. “Besides, what’s wrong with my britches?”
Violet sighed. “Your britches smell faintly like fish no matter how much Mama washes them. And Iris’ mother-in-law loves to make stupid comments about it.”
“So what?”
“ ‘So what?’ They upset Iris, that’s what! Last time you visited dressed like this, she made Iris so upset; she ran home to Mama.”
“What?” Rosie looked genuinely surprised. “Her father-in-law and husband are fishmongers. It’s not like they smell like perfume when they close up shop!”
“I know, I know, but can you for just once put on a skirt?” Violet sighed.
Rosie let out a long suffering sigh. “Stupid people.”
“Yeah…”
“Okay, I will, but only when it stops raining,” Rosie said. She looked out the window again and smiled. The way the raindrops were pelting the glass, it was going to be a while before the rain stopped. If she was lucky, Iris, would bring the baby here, where she could dress as comfortably as she liked and would not have to deal with the stuck up people her oldest sister called family.
