Ivy Pritchard stood under the tent and looked around at the wine casks stacked up behind her. Her brothers set out several bottles of wine on a table at the front of the tent. When they had finished, her older brother Luc set up the cash box, while her other brother Robert set out some tiny wine glasses.

She spent the morning handing out samples of wine to those who entered the tent. If they liked it, she would direct them to her brothers where they could either buy another glass, or a bottle to enjoy later on at home. Things changed when he walked in with his friends. Tall and tan, with a mop of dark, auburn hair, he the bluest eyes she had ever seen. Ivy felt her cheeks heat up when he smiled at her.

“Are you okay, Miss?” he said as he took a glass of wine off her tray. He handed it to one of his friends, making sure to hand each one a glass, before helping himself to one.

Ivy nodded in reply. She did not know what came over her as she nodded again when he took her gently by the arm and led her over to the table where his friends sat.

“Ivy? What are you doing?” Robert called out.

“Nothing…” she looked over at her brother. “I’m sorry, I have to go.” Ivy felt her cheeks heating up.

“It’s okay, Miss Ivy,” he said, flashing a toothy smile at her.

“Thank you…” She scurried off trying not to cry at sound of their laughter.

Robert took one look at her and hurried over to the table where men sat. “I don’t know what you said to my sister, but-”

“But what?” One of the men pushed his chair back and stood up. He cracked his knuckles.

“Sit down, Jorge.” The stranger turned in seat to look at Robert. “Your sister is a pretty girl and if I had a sister like that, I’d fighting all the men in town over her too, but, friend, no one said anything bad to her.”

Robert glared at him.

Ivy stood with her back to the men, crying softly. Her other brother Luc glanced over at the men.

“What happened?” He handed her his handkerchief.

“Nothing and Robert is just making things worse.” Ivy wiped her face and did her best to compose herself.

Luc nodded. He had a fair idea what was going on as every time Robert caught a boy talking to Ivy, he stuck his nose in where it did not belong. Luc turned, and grabbing two bottles of wine, he walked over to the table where his brother stood. “Gentlemen, I understand you liked our wine, perhaps you enjoy a bottle on the house.”

“Thank you. See, Jorge, I knew they’d be reasonable.” The man held up his glass and nodded at Luc, he grinned.

Luc laughed and Ivy felt better at the sound of it. She knew her brothers loved her, but she wished Robert would stop being so silly whenever a man tried talking to her.

It was not long before her brother called out to her, “Ivy, can bring us another two bottles of wine?”

She nodded and did as she was told.

“Thanks. Oh and by the way, these are my new friends,” Luc said. “Oscar,” he pointed to one of the men, “Jorge,” he continued, going around the table, “Max. Didi you know he was named after the king?”

Ivy shook her head.

“And this is Nico.” Luc pointed to the handsome man.

“Nico,” Ivy said softly.

“Miss Ivy.” Nico smiled. “Hey, Luc, would it be alright, seeing as we just met and all, but would it be alright if I took your sister to the dance, this afternoon?”

Two sets of eyes looked expectantly at Luc.

“NO!” Robert shouted.

Ignoring his brother’s outburst, Luc said, “Only if she wants to go with you.”

Ivy smiled. “Yes.” She blushed.

Robert tried arguing against it, but Luc silenced him with a look. “Then it’s settled. Have her back by sundown.”

“Will do.”

Ivy was glad no one had any further comments. She let out a tiny sigh of relief. “Thank you, Luc,” she said softly and taking Nico’s arm, she left the tent with him, followed by his friends, who left her alone with him.

“This your first Vine Fest?” Nico said as they headed towards the town square.

Ivy nodded. The looks they got were not lost on her and she did not know if she should laugh or cry.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing…”

“You sure?” Nico shot her a concerned look.

Ivy blushed. “Well…”

“Well what?” he gently prodded.

“Everyone keeps staring at us.”

“That’s cuz they’ve never seen such a pretty girl, especially one on the arm of some scruff ol’ fisherman.” He grinned and wagged his eyebrows at her.

Ivy could not help laughing.

“That’s better!” Nico said. “So what’s so funny?”

“The fish,” Ivy chortled. “I’m sorry, but you do smell faintly of the sea.” She giggled.

Nico smirked. “How do you know I’m not a merman?”

Her eyes went wide. “Really?”

He snorted in amusement. “Nah…” He shrugged.

“Oh…” She blushed.

“Let’s dance!”

Before she could reply, Ivy was swept up in his arms as he waltzed her towards where people were dancing. She giggled. Ivy loved how he made it fun by making up stories about the other couples that waltzed by. She was surprised by how much time had passed as it felt like they had just got there, but the fading light indicated it was time to go.

They walked in companionable silence back to the wine tent. Outside it, Ivy looked up at Nico and said, “Thank you for an amazing afternoon.”

“You’re welcome. So, will I see you again?”

Ivy nodded. “Until tomorrow…?”

“Until then.” Nico walked her into the tent and over to her brothers. “Good night.” He nodded.

“Bye, Nico…” Ivy said softly.

“Good bye, Sweetie. Perhaps, I’ll see you soon…?” Nico waved and left the tent.

Ivy nodded. She hugged herself and humming softly; she danced around the table and stood there, waiting for the next customer to walk in, her mind replaying the events of the afternoon. She could not wait to see Nico again, despite the grumblings of her brother Robert swearing he probably would not show up and something about plenty of fish in the sea. She knew in her heart of hearts that Nico would be back.

Robert needs to calm down, but at least it worked out for Ivy in the end.
