The Perfect Gift

Sherlock lay on the sofa as Watson decorated the place for Christmas. He was not a fan of the holiday, or holidays in general, so his friend had to go it alone. Remembrances of Christmases past danced in his head, none in particular standing out. He found them rather dull affairs, and yet, he dutifully went to Harrods and bought presents. John, however, was proving to be hard to buy for. Sherlock even braved the crowds on several occasions to no avail.

“Be back in a bit!” he cried as he jumped up from the sofa. Grabbing his coat, he was out the door in a flash. He dashed through the streets, running as if his life depended on it, until he reached the secondhand bookshop. The owner was locking up when Sherlock arrived and luckily for him, he kept the shop open long enough for Sherlock to get the perfect gift. Book in hand, he hurried home.

“Merry Christmas, John,” Sherlock said, handing him the book.

“How did you know? Never mind,” John said when he saw the twinkle in his friend’s eye. Of course Sherlock would know how much he loved reading Winnie the Pooh as a child.
